Elizabeth Anne Holmes is an American entrepreneur. She founded a blood test company named “Theranos” in 2003 when she was a 19 years old chemical engineering major at Stanford University.

Elizabeth Holmes was born on February 3, 1984. She was born in Washington, D.C.


Her father’s name is Christian Holmes IV and her mother is Noel Anne (Daoust). Her father worked in the United States, Africa and China as part of government agencies such as USAID. Her mother worked as a Congressional committee staffer. She has a brother, Christian Holmes V.


She has completed graduation from St. John’s School in Houston in 2002. Then she enrolled at Stanford University to study chemical engineering. She was a brilliant student who was named one of the “President’s Scholars” and given a stipend of $3,000 to pursue a research project.

Invention of Theranos:

While she was a 19-year old sophomore at Stanford, She offered her chemical engineering professor, Channing Robertson to establish a company in the fall of 2003. She named her company Theranos (an amalgam of “therapy” and “diagnosis”).

Success of Theranos:

The company was her invention which patent for a way to run 30 common lab tests on blood obtained via a finger stick. Her company uses microfluidics or “lab-on-a-chip” technology which is much faster and cheaper method than traditional lab testing techniques. The company was licensed to operate in every state in the US by offering 200 tests by 2014. They earned nearly $10 billion. Theranos has entered into a partnership with drugstore chain Walgreens. The plus point of Theranos is they offer a full menu of blood tests directly to consumers at a charge that is generally one-quarter to one-tenth of what others charge.

Successful Entrepreneur:

Holmes is the youngest self-made female billionaire on the Forbes 400 list. She has 18 US patents and 66 non-US patents in her name and is listed as a co-inventor on over a hundred patent applications. Her estimated net worth is $4.6 billion.

This CEO of Theranos works hard to change the world into happy one and she believes that one day their hard works will surely bring some massive change.
