Paris Saint-Germain coach Unai Emery was fighting for survival on Thursday after his side were swept away 6-1 by Barcelona in a Champions League rush described as a “NIGHTMARE” and a “HUMILIATION”.
Last month, The Spaniard had been beaten as a tactical genius when his French champions stunned mighty Barcelona 4-0 in Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their last-16 tie.
But on Wednesday night, in front of almost 100,000 people at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, Paris Saint-Germain shipped three late goals in an unbelievable last 7 minutes as Barcelona completed the greatest comeback in the history of the tournament, and winning 6-5 on a total.
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said, ’When you win 4-0, then lose 6-1, it is very hard to accept,’ the Qatari official whose country has poured millions of dollars into the French club.
Everyone knows that the quarter-finals were objective and after winning the first leg 4-0 that aim was confirmed.
This is a bad dream for everybody. Is Unai Emery still believable? This is not the exact moment to talk of this. We are all upset after the game.
A “L’Equipe”, Influential French sport daily was quick to highlight the insinuation of becoming the shock European fall guys.
It said, ‘It is the entire PSG project that is threatened by this humiliation.’
Meanwhile, Emery said Paris Saint-Germain was damaged by German referee Deniz Aytekin’s decisions to award 2 penalties to Barcelona and both in the second half.
‘We made mistakes which are unacceptable’
On 50 minutes, Lionel Messi converted the first penalty to make it 3-0, before Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani scored what looked like a critical away goal.
After scoring an 88th-minute free kick, Neymar tucked away from the second penalty in the 91st minute before Sergi Roberto got the vital goal in the 5th minute of injury time.
Spanish coach Emery said, ‘the truth is we have let huge chances get away and we are conscious of that. In the first half, it was more our fault than them playing well.’
‘It changed in the second half. The (Lionel Messi) penalty got them off to a great start but I was already quiet because I could see the team was responding better were better positioned on the pitch and could do smash.
We had opportunities to make it 3-2 and then the refereeing decisions, I do not know if they were right or wrong but for sure they damaged us. We lost everything than in the last two minutes and we had recovered in the 2nd half.
In their stadium, Barcelona is capable of this. They played all or nothing and they have beaten us in the last few minutes.
Belgian defender Thomas Meunier of Paris Saint-Germain blasted his team-mates for allowing Barcelona to pretty them.
He said, at 5-1 down, we were qualifying but we conceded a goal that we should not have confessed. We were victims and let them dominate us that we acquiesced.
Even when were 3-1 down we had lots of chances to score but we did not take them. We made unacceptable mistakes and handed the game to them.
